Taking a step away from our normal routine, we were invited to shoot a final project for the Fashion Insitute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) graduating class in San Francisco. The students formed groups and immersed themsleves in varying decades, then created looks inspired by the trends of the time. If the big hair, turquoise eyeshadow, and retro Wayfarers weren’t hint enough, here is a shot from the ’80s, the first in our series of four images from the shoot.

Returning from a picnic in the park, Sommer’s natural, unforced style is highlighted by her much-loved pair of Converse and a halo of tousled blond hair. When asked to describe her look, Sommer shrugs, as if to discount the very idea, and says, “I’m just a throw-it together kinda girl.”

Found crouched over a box of records for sale, Derek was wearing a pair of crazy neon yellow sneakers. Upon closer inspection, we discovered Derek was sporting the vintage collaboration between Adidas and Stan Smith. He had first spotted them in the wrong size at Ross, but six months later, a visit to a different Ross revealed his size. Within a few weeks of buying them, he said the color began to morph a bit, but that didn’t stop the flood of compliments he receives every time he wears them. Now he kicks himself for only buying one pair.
